Sponsors Sought for Newly Designed Historical Markers Series

TIC’s Heritage Programs are seeking sponsors for a new series of historical markers designed to encourage motorists to stop and explore the state’s diverse regional history, culture and geology. Potential sites include public parks, welcome centers and rest areas along major highways and I-5.

“Traveling to experience other people’s landscapes, history and way of life is an important, growing aspect of tourism,” said Cheryl Gribskov, TIC Executive Director. “The markers will help preserve an area’s unique history and character and at the same time, help boost local economies,” she said.

The first markers will be dedicated in 2009 to coincide with Oregon’s sesquicentennial, and additional markers will be installed over the next few years. When complete, the series will provide an enduring tribute to the heritage of geographic regions throughout the state.

Sponsorship is open to businesses, foundations, nonprofits, and public agencies. TIC encourages communities and potential sponsors to work collaboratively to sponsor a marker in their region or sub-region. Read more about sponsorship and the benefits and costs (as a PDF).

The series is commissioned by TIC and produced by Sea Reach Ltd., a specialized exhibit company in Sheridan, Oregon. Narrative text and graphics are being developed with oversight from the TIC Historical Marker Committee and other experts in Oregon history. View the prototype design (as a PDF).
