101st Historical Marker Dedicated in Bly, Oregon
The historical marker committee dedicated its 101st historical marker in Bly, Oregon in October.
The Balloon Bomb Marker is a result of a partnership with the Forest Service and the Bly Community Action Team, and funded in part by a grant from Klamath County.
“The Bly Community Action Team is proud to partner with the Historical Marker Committee, the Forest Service and Klamath County to bring this significant event to the attention of the general public and to honor those that lost their lives during WWII.”, said Leda Hunter of Bly, Oregon.
The marker commemorates an event that took place on a spring day in 1945. A party of 5 children, lead by a local minister’s wife, were killed by a Japanese “balloon bomb” near Bly, Oregon. The bomb, or Fugo, was part of a Japanese mission during World War II to spread terror and panic within the continental United States. The Fugo was designed to ignite fires, but few bombs did any real damage. The US government put the media under censorship regarding the bombs. The Japanese, with no news of the bombs arriving in the US, eventually abandoned the program.
